Ivan Demidov, the highly praised Russian winger, is set to join the Montreal Canadiens for the remainder of the 2024-2025 NHL season. SKA St. Petersburg, his former team in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), announced his departure, paving the way for his transition to the NHL. Drafted fifth overall by the Canadiens in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, Demidov had an impressive stint with SKA St. Petersburg. During the 2024-2025 KHL season, he recorded 12 goals and 17 assists in 39 games, earning Rookie of the Month honours twice and setting a record for the most single-season points by a U-20 player in league history with 43 points.
Marco D'Amico broke the news yesterday morning to fans and followers of the franchise.“Most likely, I’ll have time to play in the regular season for Montreal,” Demidov stated in his exclusive interview wit RG.
The Canadiens also announced earlier this afternoon that Demidov will wear No. 93 for the remainder of his season in Montreal, an homage to both Doug Gilmour and the year the franchise last captured the Stanley Cup.
Demidov's journey to the NHL was not without challenges. Reports indicated that he declined multiple contract extension offers from SKA St. Petersburg, leading to reduced playing time and benchings during the season.
This situation underscored his determination to join the Canadiens and compete at the highest level. The Canadiens' management has expressed enthusiasm about Demidov's arrival. General Manager Kent Hughes highlighted his dedication and skill set, stating, "I was blown away by his maturity."
Demidov's addition is anticipated to significantly boost Montreal's offensive capabilities, aligning with the team's strategic objectives for the upcoming season.
As Demidov transitions to North America, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his dynamic playing style and proven scoring ability will translate to the NHL. His integration into the Canadiens' lineup is expected to be a pivotal development in the team's pursuit of success in the 2025-2026 season.
