Patrik Laine, the gift that keeps on giving. With 6 goals in his last 7 games he has brought the holiday spirit back to the Montreal Canadiens, but could he give more? Laine is undoubtably exceeding expectations with nearly one goal per game however, there’s a clear pattern in his recent goals, all of them have come on the power play. This has led to mixed reactions from fans and analysts , wondering if the 25 year old winger can be a more complete offensive threat and return to the form that once made him one of the NHL's top scorers.
While improving the Habs power play is something many are unsuccessful at, we know he has the ability to provide more to the team. While Laine’s ability to excel on the power play is unquestionable, it’s important to remember that his scoring ability was never limited to just special teams. Throughout his career, Laine has proved that he can score at even strength, with 63% of his career goals coming during 5-on-5. Prior to his recent injuries and personal setbacks, Laine was known for being a dynamic offensive force, capable of lighting the lamp in a variety of situations.
In the end, the question isn’t whether Patrik Laine can score goal, it’s whether he can take his game to the next level. With his recent hot streak, Laine has shown that he’s more than capable of being a difference maker for the Canadiens. However, for Laine to reach his full potential, he needs to regain his even strength scoring touch and continue to grow into the all-around offensive force that he once was. If Laine can find his way through to scoring 5-on-5 in the new year, the Canadiens will have a superstar goalscorer on their hands and the fans will finally be able to take a deep breath. The future of this team is looking sharp and it seems to be only uphill from here, with the younger players coming in within the next couple of seasons he will be a great role model.
